What is the most important thing homeowners should consider when refreshing their home’s entryway?
The first impression of any home is the curb appeal of the home and its entryway. A beautifully presented entryway makes one feel welcomed and is inviting to all. The first step to achieve this is to ensure a clean, clutter free space with a few accents that are in harmony with the colors and the style of the home. A little bit of attention and touch ups to any scuffs or peeling paint will go a long way to make the right first impression for any prospective buyers.
What are some quick, easy, affordable ways to refresh an entryway and increase curb appeal?
The quickest way is to add a few easy to maintain structural plants in attractive planters. Plants add life and warmth to any entryway. One key aspect is to select plants that complement the height and space of the entryway, for instance if it has a high ceiling and a tall door, I would look for a tall planter with a structural plant. Entryways with lower profiles, on the other hand, would benefit from an informal arrangement of seasonal blooms. If the total area is large, a cluster of plants in planters of staggered height can create a lovely effect. Always be careful that your choice doesn't crowd or obstruct the flow of movement. While selecting plants, do keep in mind how much light the entryway gets.

A home I had to stage needed a quick uplift in a small budget. I was able to make the entrance look stylish by adding a few interesting modern planters that I was able to pick up at Home Goods paired with some plants from Home Depot that uplifted the space for less than $150. As it's a small space, I didn't opt for any furniture and even removed the entry mat to let the plants be the focus. Something so simple made a world of difference!
What is too often overlooked in the entrance to a house?
Lighting is important and can make a statement. I would choose a smart and simple wall sconce with a warm light that is not too bright. Uplighters or downlighters can work well too. If you have the space, adding a small sculptural piece of furniture always adds some excitement. My go to are benches - they come in so many shapes and sizes and are so practical and useful. If you have a really large space like a porch around the entryway a rocker or a pair of Adirondack chairs are great popular additions.
Something folks usually don't think of...
It feels weird to say it out loud, but I've noticed so many homes where the first impression is the cobwebs and clutter around the entryway!
